I’ve been using Home Assistant for some time, and it’s not bad at all. It’s written in Python, so it’s easy to extend if necessary. I’ve not used it with Z-Wave though, only with Bluetooth-based EQ3 thermostats and a few Ikea Trådfri sockets — but not directly, only through their wireless gateway. (EQ3 support specifically needs some love though.)
